SANGMIN TANG LEE (He/They)

Sangmin Tang Lee, born in South Korea in 1993, is a visual artist best known for their work depicting the experiences of being an AMAB (Assigned Male at Birth) Asian queer person. Through Lee’s practice, they feature Asian trans and queer individuals, including themselves, using their art to represent current queer culture.

Lee’s artistic career began after they took their first art class at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington State, USA in 2017. Lee gained recognition with their controversial and striking colored self-portraits. Through their distinctive self-portraits, Lee raised awareness of queer existence in South Korea, a country where it is framed as synonymous with fear and ignorance, thereby advancing their career as an artist. In 2018, under the guidance of trans activist/artist Molly Vaughan, Lee started creating political portrayals of Asian trans and queer individuals they met through underground events. Lee's sincere and vibrant figurative works challenge viewers' preconceptions of their subjects and empower queer individuals.

In 2019, Lee also began to gain recognition in South Korea. They made history as the first queer artist to host a solo exhibition and a drag show at the prestigious Seoul N Tower in 2021. They held a solo exhibition about Korean trans and non-binary individuals through the Han-nam Cultural Foundation in 2023. Recently, they received the Jury’s Choice award at SEAF (Seattle Erotic Art Festival).

Sangmin Tang Lee continues to represent their experience while working with Asian trans and queer individuals they meet from underground events.
